Procrastination is such a pain in the a**!
There have been many times I have felt stuck for ideas or stopped myself from working in my flow and it can still happen now. Back when I first became an entrepreneur I suffered with it really bad and would sometimes sit staring at my computer screen for hours on end just wondering what to do next.
I tried lots of different things to try and get over this issue, but here are the top 3 that seem to work for me and hopefully they will for you too!
Set Goals Each Morning
This may sound like a simple idea but the truth is, most people set goals and forget about them. By setting small goals every morning just for that particular day, you have a check list to work with which actually spurs you on to do it in a kind of unconscious way.
When I went on ‘The Next Internet Millionaire I had the pleasure of meeting Mark Joyner and we chatted for a while about his Simpleology system which is the ultimate tool for goal keeping. It is ‘the simple science of getting what you want’ and best of all it’s free! Check it out here Simpleology Mark is a lovely guy and his system will show you how best to set goals daily and stick to them!
Of course you can always write out your goals yourself if you prefer the paper pen method. When you work through your daily goals, however small (including all the daily tasks us Mum’s never stop doing!) it helps with flow and tends to free up your mind to concentrate.
Concentrate On One Thing At A Time
One of the biggest problems I faced as a beginner entrepreneur was information overload syndrome. Trying to think about and do too many things at once can only cause stress and grief which is not good for the soul. Being distracted by tempting offers (most entrepreneurs suffer with this!) and other things, will only cause the block in your brain to grow. Why? Because when you are trying to focus your attention to the job in hand, your mind is wandering off in several different directions and then you forget where you were and lose your concentration. Once this happens you become stuck again and everything feels so difficult.
By concentrating on your business and creative ideas for the business only, your flow will return and the brain fog will diminish, leaving you to be the free spirited, inspiring, passionate being that you are
Think Wisely About Your Daily Food Choices & Drink Plenty Of Water
I have a confession to make. I have a weakness for junk food. If it has chocolate or cream in it, I’m there drooling over it. My Dad’s side of the family are American and as a child we used to go to the air base to get our food and stock up on lots of warming comfort foods. Mum always made home made pies and cookies and sugary treats were aplenty in our cupboards. Food has always been a big struggle for me and still is now, I will not deny that. But I have also taken the time to educate myself on health and nutrition and try as much as possible to eat as well as I can. I’m a big fan of the raw food diet (although I’ve never gone 100%) and low carb is great too and suits my family more because they are meat lovers! The reason I mention this is because I have come to notice a massive difference in my productivity and overall mood when eating healthy and drinking more water throughout the day. This definitely helps me to unblock and be more alert and aware when working on my businesses. It’s amazing how junk food and carbs (in large quantities) can have a sedative effect on the brain. By eating more fruit, vegetables and greens it’s literally filling your body with live enzymes and in essence is waking you up from that sleepy state that sugar and carbs creates.
So here’s my suggestions in a nutshell:
- Eat healthy all week whilst working and leave carbs and sweet stuff for the weekends
- Fit in some form of exercise daily (I have two dogs to walk).
- Drink water on waking to clear you out and have a bottle by your desk during the day to constantly sip small amounts
So whenever you feel procrastination creeping back, just try this and see if it helps to unblock you.

Hey Carly,
Great article which reminds me about some daily habits I know I should do, but don’t always do.
I totally know what you mean for having a weakness for junk food. I always feel as though I’m struggling with an internal conflict to keep my food demons at bay.
Thanks for the great article and keep up the great work.
